The greatest wealth is to live in content with little
for there is never want when the mind is satisfied.
Lucretius
T he above is written
on a sign that hangs on the wall of my quite probable*
future home here in the Philippines. I don't usually for
the million-and-one saccharine sweet sayings that do the
rounds on the text message networks here in the Philippines (this
one being far and away the worse...), but the above seems
quite apt given the simplicity of the house.
My bed will be a foam mattress on the
floor in a room that contains a bunk bed
for the other occupants; some non-working
televisions; a table and storage bins.
The simple meals will be cooked in
the kitchen using a
coal powered burner.
Showers will be of the tip-a-bucket-over-your-head variety
and the toilet will be - thankfully - an actual
toilet albeit a bucket-flushed one.
Pretty damn simple living. Would I trade this for the
life I use to have in the super-sweet
Digital Empire?
Not on your life.
* Only probable because things are changing
day-by-day here.
