V-Day Happenings

10th March 2008

Crazymalc's life currently consist of teaching, and helping out on with the V-Day Seoul 2008 movement.  This post is all about the V-Day side of things

V-Day is a world wide movement aimed at ending violence against women and children.  The money raised by V-Day Seoul will go towards the Dasi Hamkee (together again) center.  The Dasi Hamkee helps victims and survivors of the sex industry trade.

V-Day Fundraiser
February 23rd was the 2nd big fundraiser for V-Day (I couldn't make the first one).  We convinced a pub in a Korean area of town to allow us to hold a fundraiser there.

The purpose of the event was two-fold.  Firstly, to raise some money for the Dasi Hamkee center.   Secondly, it is to raise awareness about the whole issue of human trafficking.  I've explained human trafikking to quite a few of my Korean friends and most of them are dumbstruck when the hear about the types of things that goes on.

Amy and So Maria did an excellent job of M.C.ing the event and talked about the Dasi Hamkee center and the work they do.

We charged people a cover charge (5000 won ~ $NZ3.88) to get it and had some live bands (Seth Martin, My Friend Matt and Sotto Gamba) playing.  We also had Massage Angels who would give a quick shoulder massage and then ask for a donation.  We also had several raffles going.

I did a lot of work prior to the event coming up with advertising flyers.  The English flyer can be found here, and the Korean version here.

I was the doorman on the night itself.  Everyone time somebody came in, I gave the same speech.

Hello.  We're holding a fundraiser here to help fight violence against women and children.  We are asking for a donation to get in.  Anything is fine, but most people give 5,000 won.  Thanks!  Here is your free jello shot and some information about the Dasi Hamkee center and V-Day Seoul 2008.

A line like "Anything is fine, but most people give 5,000 won" is an excellent one for fundraisers.  What will usually happen is that one or two cheap bastards will give 1,000 won, some people will give 5,000 won, but most people actually give more than 5,000 won.  I tried this trick when I was selling GrassRootsUganda.com at a Catholic church and one lovely Filipino gentleman gave me $US100 for one necklace!

I spent the whole night on the door and did not really "Party it up" like a lot of the other volunteers were doing.  I was cool with that.  I'm not really into the whole pub scene.  I don't drink, and I don't smoke which immediately takes out two of the popular pub pastimes.  I also lose my voice really easily so the loud music doesn't help.  Give me a cafe and some good conversation over a pub any day.

We raised about two million won (~$NZ 2,500) on the night.

The Vagina Monologues
Our finale and biggest event will be two showings of the play the Vagina Monologues on the 15th and 16th of March.

My involvement up to this point has been designing the promotional posters, website, programs and a four-story advertisement.  All the deign work has kept me busy and I have spent many a late night tweaking the designs.

I attended the dress rehearsal for the play on the 9th of March.  Not to rehearse - they wouldn't let me act, something about lacking the necessary equipment - but to get my camera angles sussed for the big performance.

I am going to be putting together a video of the whole performance.  I have three cameras and three cameramen all set to go.  I am going to integrate the audio via the stage mikes into the video.  It is going to be quite a production, but I am looking forward to doing it.  It also gives me a good excuse to put my new video camera through its paces.

I also snapped a million pictures of the actresses during rehearsal.  We wanted to get some good pictures taken as There-Is-No-Flash-Photography-During-The-Production-Thank-You-Very-Much.  Photos can be found here.
