A Good Man gets a Bad Break
20th May 2007 It was with much joy then when I returned to Dumangas to pay Beth and Jun a visit. Beth was there and was her normal lovely self. Over the coming days, she seemed to be forever giving me coffee, watermelon, siopao... Jun however, was not present. As I mentioned way back here, Jun was having terrible problems with his nerves that caused his body to twitch uncontrolably. It was so bad, that Jun had to stop working. What Jun technically has is X-Linked Dystonia-Parkinsonism (XDP). XDP - as I understand it - causes muscles to involuntarily contract. This makes life very hard for Jun. Walking, keeping his eyes open and just functioning normally are a real trial for Jun. Jun is currently in the U.S.A. receiving treatment. He gets botox* shots every now and then to relax his muscles and reduce the tremors. This helps treats the symptons, but is not a cure. What Jun really needs is treatment called Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) that should cure him of his XDP. Little Michael Sharpe of the U.S.A. also had XDP and underwent the DBS process with stunning results. He use to look and walk like a hunchback, now he is just a normal everyday kid. A video about Michael and his turnaround can be found here. The problem for Jun is the cost of his treatment: $US60,000! Not a small sum for anyone in the world, yet alone the owner of a small internet business in a small rural town in the Philippnes. Jun has set up a website where you can find a heap of information about him and the struggles he faces. Through the website you can also make donations that will help Jun receive the treatment he do despertaly needed. I encourage you to log on and make a donation. Jun is a good man given a bad break. You can help make Jun just a good man. *Yes, that same drug that celebrities and the vain get to reduce wrinkles.
