Leaving Romblon
7th May 2007Another day, another leaving... By brief sojorn in Romblon has come to an end. I wanted to achiece two things in Romblon. The first was to help out on some project-a-rather while I was there. The project turned out to be the roof on the Carmen day care center. A good two weeks work with a satisfying result. After my one year paid (!) teaching contract in South Korea, I plan to return to the Philippines for two years and live off the money I have saved. The big question though is where will I be based? Manila? Dumangas? Romblon? Where? Which brings to the second thing I wanted to do in Romblon. I wanted to find out if I could I spend two years in Romblon? The short answer is "No". There are several reasons for this. I really like volunteer company. It always rated highly in my top ten lists. See here, here and here. The volunteers is Romblon are very isolated from each other. Lorelei and I shared a house with a family, but Chris was miles away. Once you've waited for half an hour or so for a sidecar, it would still take you another hour or so to get to Chris. This is a pain and does not help foster the volunteer community. I also want to do bigger projects. Stuff that will keep me busy for two years. CERV (the volunteer organisation I work with) runs several projects on Romblon: Environment, education, health care and school maintainence. These are all great, but I can't see myself doing them for two years. I want to do GrassRootsUganda.com sized projects. I have some ideas on what these projects might be, but more on this in a later article. I suspect I will be still visitng Romblon quite a bit anyway. Helping new volunteers get settled and so on. But, for now it's goodbye to Romblon.
