Romblon: Island Paradise2nd May 2007Long time readers may remember that CERV (the volunteer organization I work with in the Philippines) left Dumangas way back in April 2006. Remember how I said this: When I see pictures like this and this, my heart breaks. But, people somewhere else in the Philippines will benefit, so that must be a good thing. Well, the people benefiting are the people of Romblon. The islands of Romblon are located just to the north of that tiny showboat island of Boracay. And, just like Boracay, it is gorgeous. The beaches are numerous and stunning and the water is crystal clear. While there you can try your hand at snorkeling, or cruise around the islands in one of the many boats. Or maybe just hang out and learn to weave or play silly buggers with the kids. But, of course, all is not well on the islands. This is why the volunteer program is here. The poverty here is a notch or two down from Dumangas*. The people here are no doubt needier. Dumangas is flat and is inducive to growing rice. Romblon is mountainous and the locals struggle to grow many food crops. The sea and its bountiful fish provide much of their diet. I lived in a house with Lorelei (another volunteer) and a filipino family. The family was nice, but my heart will always be with Reza and co. in Dumangas. I'll be spending two weeks in Romblon helping to put a roof on a day care center.* Though a notch or three up from Kitgum... I have been forever comparing Africa - and Kitgum in particular to the Philippines. More on this later.
