Esther Aloyo

Esther lives with her mother, seven siblings and 2 other children of her uncle who died. Before the war, the family lived near Kitgum in northern Uganda. When the war started, the rebels killed everyone on her mother’s side: her mother’s parents, uncles, and siblings. On her father’s side, the rebel leader let the people run away and merely burned all their huts.

Then the family had to go to an IDP camp because of the war. The two oldest boys still live there, but the rest of the family is in Gangdyang near Kitgum because they lived at the IDP camp’s edge and the rebels kept stealing food and killing at the edges of the camp.

Esther’s father earns a little income from making charcoal and selling it, and some of her brothers make bricks. Her mother picks grasses and sells them for thatched roofs. This year for the first time they have grown some tomatoes near the village in spite of the risk of land mines in the area.

Esther likes school, especially science and math, and wants to be a nurse some day. She enjoys playing games with friends. She helps her family by washing dishes, cooking, collecting firewood and fetching water.

Your sponsorship of Esther will help assure that she can remain in school because the family faces difficulties in finding food, paying school fees and medical fees.

Click here to sponsor this student by adding the annual cost of $70 for school fees, uniforms and supplies to your shopping cart.
