December 2007
My life at the moment is divided between
teaching; racking my brains
about MeaningfulVolunteer.com
and whether or not I am crazy for undertaking such a thing;
ranting and
raving about religion; and
raising money for
GrassRootsUganda.com.
The weekend of the 3rd of December saw me undertaking the last of
these options with my good mate TJ. I met TJ
as part of my Beautiful Weekend.
TJ is a Catholic and has volunteered extensively in Ghana. He was
running a fundraiser at his church for a group he is involved in and
invited me along to peddle my wares.
To start with though, I had to sit through a Catholic Mass.
When I write it like that, it makes it sound a lot worse than it
actually was. I actually quite enjoyed the service and the
tradition. Being a Catholic service, it was full of Filipinos who
tend to pop up all over the world. Whenever
"Catholicism" and "Filipino" pop up, I always think of
Joccy - an ex-student of mine in
the Philippines - and the universe of wonders that is being denied her
by the small god she worships.
After the service, I placed a plethora of GrassRootsUganda.com
necklaces on a table and commenced selling.
I decided to ask my donations, instead of stipulating the usual 5,000
won (~ $NZ 6.90) asking price. This proved to be a winning idea.
Most people paid about 10,000 won a necklace. One Filipino
gentleman gave $US100 for one necklace! God bless the Filipinos!
I ended up raising about $NZ300 for the
good ladies in Uganda.
Woot!
