A Deep Breath
10th April 2007
Inhale...Hold...
Exhale...
- The citrus tang of Mountain Dew.
- A kid running through green rice fields.
- "Maayong Gabi si Malcolm!" "Maayong Gabi man."
Who
was that?
- Remembrance gifts from students.
- Practicing my Ilonggo.
- Riding tricycles roof side with the wind in my hair.
- Hoping nobody asks me to join them during the slow dance phase of a
Fiesta.
- The musty odor of recently harvested rice fields.
- Being too hot.
- One hand on my hat. One hand holding on. Four people on
the motorcycle.
- Squinting hard to work out if they are gay.
- Everyone asking me if I have a girlfriend.
- Making a kid smile by placing my hat on their head.
- Flirty text messages.
- Gwapo. Buang. Maalam. Mataas.
- Sending kids into hysterics with high fives.
- Banging my head on Jeepney roofs.
- Dodging frogs while taking the shortcut out of Dumangas.
- Wowwowee.
- Being mugged by Nicole.
- Dancing with Amay I and Amay II. This is not gay. Right?
Right?!
- Learning the new Big Brother dance.
- "Sir, do you remember me?" "Of course I do Lorren Joy.
You're a very special young lady."
- Hanging off the back of Jeepneys.
- Drenched-with-sweat t-shirts.
- Karaoke
- Rice.
- The vice mayor.
- Plastic chairs.
- "You wanna shot?"
- Revving the guts out of your tricycle.
- Being treated extra special.
- Students rolling their eyes.
- Flip-flops.
- Onal Golez.
- Simple words bringing much laughter.
- Old friends.
- New friends.
Inhale...Hold...
Exhale...
It is good to be back.
