Camp Cleanup
13th June 2006
The Buduburum Refugee Camp - or The Camp as it is affectionately known -
is a very dirty place. Specific hygiene problems include:
- People urinating wherever they happen to be
- People leaving their poo-poo plastics
lying around
I leave it you to guess what is inside a poo poo plastic.
- Used washing water thrown into the street
This is particularly noticeable in the market,
where you are forever jumping over little rivers of water
- Water Bags
Most of the safe water arrives in little water
bags. These environmental monsters are forever being drunk
and thrown into the street.
- General Rubbish
All manner of rubbish is thrown into the street. I even saw a
razor blade in the street the other day...
CBW - the local NGO (Nongovernmental organization) I volunteer for -
is trying to address these problems with its Water and Sanitation
program. They have several rubbish bins around camp and have
regular outreach programs.
Cleanup Day
Carrie decided to organize her own
cleanup day. I was keen to join in, but got my times confused and
ended up arriving half way through the clean up.
Carrie decided to get some of the local Door
Kids involved. She promised them 2000 cedi ($NZ 0.35) each if
they helped. So Carrie, some other volunteers, and a gaggle
of kids headed out one Saturday for a camp cleanup. The targeted a
local fee - or field - to clean up.
All the collected rubbish was put into a UN Dumpster.
After the cleanup, all of the kids lined up for some hand
sanitizer, which I thought was cool as it meant two lessons were
learn today - proper rubbish disposal and personal hygiene.
The kids then lined up for their well
earned reward.
