The Value of Books
I do not like Green Eggs and Ham.
I do not like them, Sam I Am.

I like books. Books and cool. I like to read them and
lose myself in someone else world for a bit. I like to give them
away and I like to receive them. They are both fun and
educational.
I don't think I am fully aware of how lucky I
am to have access to books.
Daniel,
a volunteer from the U.S.A., brought some books with him that he wanted
to donate to some local schools. I grabbed some of them and took
them to Pulao Elementary.
I took:
I remember thinking what a non-event the books
would be as I lugged them to school. I mean, there was only eight
of them. What possible affect could they have on the kids?
Well, I am happy to report how wrong I
was. The kids immediately took to the books. They were like
dry sponges soaking up the goodness of books. It was great to
see.
Daniel has inspired me. I'm gonna grab a
whole heap of Ladybird Classic Books that I saw in a
bookstore. These are highly condensed versions of books like Gulliver's
Travels and Treasure Island. Each book will set me back
115 pesos ($NZ 2.88). Hopefully it will inspire some of them into
reading the full versions when they are a little older.
So, if you're about to head to the Philippines
to do some volunteering, make sure you bring some books with you!
Anything will do. The kids will love you for it.
