Please Mr. Singapore Airlines. Let Sir Malcolm Stay
8th February 2006
Dear Singapore Airlines,
I am currently a volunteer in the Philippines. I have been here
about four and a half months teaching at Pulao Elementary School.
I take three classes and run three tutorial groups.
My original ticket has my return date as March the 17th.
This is a problem because the kids really want me to attend their
graduation, which is in the first week of April. I contacted the
lovely Mel Perkins at the Dunedin Flight Center. She initially
told me that there would be no charge. Upon contacting you though,
she learnt that there would be an additional $375 charge. To put
this in perspective, this is 16,000 pesos in the local currency, which
is far more money than any of the kids at Pulao will ever see.
I can't afford the $375, particularly with my upcoming trips to Africa,
where I will working at a Refugee camp and helping out with the HIV/Aids
epidemic.
This places me in a bit of a bind. I can't afford the $375, but
I don't want to break the kids' hearts by not attending their
graduation.
Rather than telling you how unfair I think the $375
"administration" charge is, I thought I'd let the kids tell
you why the want me to stay for their graduation.
Here are pictures of the grades I teach: Grade 4,
Grade 5 and Grade 6.
Notice how upset they are at the thought of me leaving. One kid
told me that she is praying every night that I will stay for graduation.
The kids also wrote some letters. The
are 75 letters in all. It is impractical to post them all, so I
have taken pictures of some of them. These are shown below.
They asked me to ask you to please forgive their poor English.
Click on the thumbnail for a larger view of the letter.
So, I ask you to please waive the $375 charge so that I can attend
these students graduation.
Yours in good faith,
Malcolm Trevena
