RPA Commander, 2 volunteers killed in Negros attack28th -29th January 2006, Daily Informer In an interview with Akyson Radyo-Bacolod, Inspector Teodorico Picardal, Mabinay chief of police, identified the fatalities as Rogelio Mambato, alias Ka Malvar, the RPA commander for southern Negros and Joel Mahusay and Rogelio Maylan, both members of the local Civilian Volunteers Organization (CVO). Mambato was killed just outside his house while the CVO members died at their outpost, just 500 meters away, when the retreating assassins, joined by three companions, attacked them as well. Mambato is the highest ranking officer of the RPA, which broke off from the NPA in 1992, to be killed in Negros in the bitter fighting between the two guerilla factions, he used to be a well known NPA in southern Negros before joining the RPA. Picardal said Mambato began living in Mambinay six months ago, According to the police chief, a man and a women onboard a motorcycle stopped by Mambato's house to ask for directions. After a few minutes, the duo again stopped by Mambato's house, this time allowing the motorcycle to fall on its side as if it had lost its balance. As Mambato ran out to help, the shot him in the head, killing him instantly. The two then retreated toward the CVO outpost, near the junction of the highway leading to Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, to meet their companions. Seeing Mahusay and Maylan manning the outpost, the rebels opened fire on them as well. Although both were armed, Picardal said they were caught by surprise and died before they could draw their weapons. Both also died from shots to the head. The rebels opted to leave the motorcycle behind when it would not start and commandeered a passing Toyota Revo as responding police gave chase on motorcycles. The motorcycle has been traced to a rental agency in Dumaguete City, Negros Occidental, Picardal said. Picardal said his men caught up to the rebels as they got off the commandeered vehicle and fled into a sugarcane field at Crossing Bafabalasan-Lumbang, several kilometers from the town center. The pursuing policeman, he said, opened fire and appeared to have wounded at least one of the rebels. Questions? Comments? Try contacting
