GrassRootsUganda.com in the news (kinda)
11h December 2006
I was recently setting up yet another craft group in the village of
Naggalama (where Spike works)
when a couple of journalists approached. They were very interested
in what we are doing, so I chatted them for about a half an hour and
gave them the lowdown.
The also wanted me to pose for a few pictures, which was fine.
Lawrence, the head of the NGO that Spike works for, mysteriously
produced a big sign bedecked with his NGOs logo and insisted that he
shake my hand in front of the sign for the cameras. Stealing a
little bit of reflected glory methinks...
What eventually eventuated from all of this was:
- A brief clip on the radio
I didn't hear it myself, but Chris
reported that he heard it. It was spoken in Lugandan, so it
was a string of words that he didn't understand interlaced with
things like "GrassRootsUganda.com", "NGO", and
"necklaces".
- A very brief mention in the newspaper
Which is reproduced here in all its
page six glory.
The first sentence gets nothing right. Grassroot Uganda (?) is
not a global NGO, nor is it "multi-million", whatever that
is. The second sentence is a bit better.
Mind you, I can't complain. It got a slightly higher priority
than the page seven bestiality
article...
