Some more facts and figures
13th August 2006
I like statistics. I like measuring things. Maybe this
is why I enjoy the infinitely measurable game of cricket.
I collected a whole lot of
statistics when I left the Philippines. I thought I'd compare
the numbers for the Philippines to the those in Little Liberia.
- Total Days Stayed
Philippines: 189
Little Liberia: 74
No surprises here.
- Pictures Taken
Philippines: 7,611
Little Liberia: 1,236
That's forty a day in the Philippines and sixteen a day in Little
Liberia.
- Cameras used
Philippines: Three
Little Liberia: Two
I guess I just don't have much luck with cameras.
- Cell phones used
Philippines: Three
Little Liberia: Zero
In the Philippines, there was a real culture of volunteers having cell phones.
In Little Liberia, there wasn't. This made it a real pain to
coordinate activities.
I liked it though that I was out of contact. Was a nice change
from having a cell phone welded to the side of my face while working
in New Zealand.
- Kissed Received
Philippines: Two
Little Liberia: Two and and a half
The first kiss was a friendly one from Carrie.
The second was a little awkward. I was a judge at a spelling
bee contest. At the end of the contest, Alvin - the school
administrator - was thanking all the judges. The first
judge was Carrie. She gave Alvin a kiss on both of his
cheeks. Just for a laugh, I thought I'd make out to kiss Alvin
on the cheeks in the hope that he would laugh and pull away.
He didn't and I had to go through with kissing him. Ugh.
I can understand why girls complain about stubble rash now.
The second-and-a-half kiss was one I gave Nicholas.
Well, kinda. Carrie (why is Carrie involved in every kissing
story?) emailed me and asked me to give Nicholas a kiss from
her. I wasn't keen to plant one on his cheek, so I blew him a
kiss and said it was from Carrie. I told Carrie and she insisted
that I kiss him again Brokeback Mountain style...
- Number of Students who Passed their Year
Philippines: 87
Little Liberia: No idea
This speaks volumes to me how much I connected to the students in
the Philippines and how little I connected with the Little Liberia
students.
- Most Expensive Item Lost
Philippines: SIM card ($NZ 6,000)
Little Liberia: My Hat (Priceless)
I am so bummed I lost my hat.
It was like losing a part of myself.
- Most treasured acquisition
Philippines: D.C.V.
Basketball Top and Lorren Joy's photo
Little Liberia: My pants
The pants are cool, but they are not nearly as precious to me as
the basketball top and the photo.
- Kilograms lost
Philippines: Seven
Little Liberia: Not really sure, but I would guess three or four.
