Leaving New Zealand

27th September 2005
And I'm gone!  Off on Stage 1 of my big adventure!

I was helping my sister with an amplifier the night before I left and that kept my mind occupied.  So I didn't really have a chance to think about things, which was probably a good thing.

I didn't think I was nervous the morning of departure either, but for some reason nerves got the better of me and I was reacquainted with the breakfast I had eaten earlier.  I mention this only under duress (of honesty) as this does not fit with the macho-image I am trying to portray...

My parents drove me to the airport and waited for about an hour in the aero-mall (a cross between an airport and a shopping mall) before I needed to go.

I felt like one of those Around The World boats that I've seen leave Auckland harbour.  The large sailing boats have a swarm of smaller vessels around them as they leave the dock.  One by one though, the smaller boats turn around and head back to shore until only the Around the World boats remain.  I am just like those large sailing boats.  One by one, friends and family fell by the wayside and have headed home.  I walked alone through the departure gate...

The flight to Singapore took 10 1/2 hours.  Singapore Airline planes are just cool.  Everyone gets their own little LCD screens from which you can access: 60 Movie Channels, dozens of CD's, 120 TV like channels, Audio Books and numerous documentaries.  This must have been stored digitally, as you can fast forward, pause etc to your heart's content.

It also showed flight info information that showed you just where in the world you were, in addition to ground speed, E.T.A and altitude.

Very cool...
