San Miguel Beer Corporation rolled its annual beer worshipping
carnival into Dumangas on the 13th of October for 3 days of partying,
drinking beer, dancing, drinking beer, singing, and drinking beer.
It came complete with scantily clad beer
babes, local bands, beer
drinking competitions, and one helluva party
spirit. Most of the local community turned up and drank, dance
and sang the night away.
People in the Philippines enjoy there alcohol. There is no
doubt about it. While much beer was consumed, I didn't see anyway
getting messy or obnoxious with it, which is kinda cool.
Once again, the volunteers were made to feel like celebrities. In
the mayor's speech, he thanked us each by name
and when the scantily clad beer babes
wanted to get people dancing, they grabbed the volunteers first.
The locals were typically friendly and many of then came up to me and
offered to buy me a drink. It was really nice. Even the
local Rotary club said "Hi".
The local children are fascinated by with the volunteers and I spent a lot of time playing silly buggers
with them. Some of them were children I knew from school,
and some of them were local street orphans.
Like most friendly gatherings though, there are those who want to
spoil it. Some volunteers (not me!) were approached by some drug
dealers peddling there wares. The local captain was quite
concerned about it and insisted on ordering a motorbike to give me a
lift home.
All in all, a fun night.
