Cleaning Up The River

8th October 2005
The local river in Dumangas has been polluted over many years.  It is only in recent years that the area has had anything vaguely resembling a public sanitation serice, so any waste was just dumped in the river.  The locals are paying for that now.

The local mayor officially empolyed 5 people to clean the river on the Saturday.  About 50 people turned up.  Some of them watched the show, and some of them helped out.  Rowen, Megan (another volunteer) and I also helped out.  Most of the work I did was picking the rubbish up from the mud.

Some of the local lads were using machettes to cut back the mangroves.  A chainshaw would of made the job 100 times easier, but they are very hard to get in The Philippines because of the cost, and that you require a permit to own one.  Many a local forest has been decimated by many a chainsaw.
