Official Blessings and Openings
25th December 2005
Tabucan has not had decent facilities for a long time. They completed
construction of many facilities this year, largely through the efforts
of Captain Audy. I went along to the official events on
Christmas morning.
The Service
The proceedings kicked off with a Catholic mass, my second
in as many days. The priest, from what I
can tell, was talking about idols and how you shouldn't put them before
God. Thing like money, status and even family should come second
to God.
He also talked about ensuring you use the right manual. That it
is pretty foolish to use a cell phone manual to work out how to use a
video player. He then drew the obvious parallel with the
importance of applying the Bible's teaching to ones own life.
This is what I think he said anyway. I managed to pick
up a few Hilganon words in his sermon and he used a little bit of
English as well.
I'm not quite sure what any of this had to do with the opening of the
facilities. Maybe he was trying to reach the one-service-a-year-sinners in the audience.
Official Openings
Mayor Distura was present to officially open the Multi-Purpose
Hall, the Basketball Court, the Stage and
the Daycare Center.
Food
Filipino's love to eat no matter what. I'm sure if a
revolution happened in Manila, they'd be a guy on the street selling
hotdogs-ona-stick. From named animals too, and I don't mean "Fido"
or "Ginger" either.
They also love to share food. Wherever I go, people offer me
food. I was touring around some Barangays the other day
helping another volunteer determine which were most needy of water pumps.
I thought we should split them up into "Needy", "Very
Needy" and "Extremely needy". One factor that
hampered us a little bit was the hospitality of the locals. We had
to have some food at each place we visited. A nice problem to have
though.
Having several facilities being opened is too good an excuse to eat
so there was a very formal lunch afterwards that
Ciaran and I were invited to.
Kudos
The facilities are pretty cool. What's even better though is
that it got completed with the money that was given. As far as I
can tell very little, if any, got sucked up into the black hole of
corruption. I know Captain Audy got a lot of respect for that from
the Mayor and the people. I give respect too. *thumps chest*
