Stuff Happens

1st December 2005

The Christmas spirit starts to kick in
As previously noted, Christmas is huge in The Philippines.  Reza has gone berserk with Christmas lights and has covered her entire house with them.

Dinner Parties
Linda and Emma live by themselves in a house.  They decided to have a very western style dinner party.  We had a vegetable curry and lotsa fruit.

We also had a game of bingo, which yours truly won.  We also indulged in some drinking games.  For some reason these were very easy for me.  Maybe the coke I was drinking wasn't strong enough...

Ciaran and Glen also have their own place.  They are both doing the environmental program and so their house is on the coast which is about 20 minutes away from where I live.  June and his trusty tricycle gave us a lift out there for another dinner party.

When we arrived, we were treated to a spectacular sunset.  Apparently the sunsets are ever better in Manila due to the pollution.  It was a great night. We played silly buggers and Ciaran and Robin were brave enough to try some balut.

D.C.V. makes the Magic Six
The Dumangas Country Village basketball team that I am on is going great guns.  Our current record stands at two wins and one loss which guarantees us a place in the Magic Six phase of the tournament.  I've even managed to score some points now, much to the delight of the crowd.  I've also taken four free throw shots, all of which I missed...

Nicole's Birthday Party
Nicole, the young girl who lives in the same house as me, recently celebrated her 3rd birthday.  There were many silly games played and much food and drink consumed.

The party was held at Randy's parents place.  Randy is the father of Nicole and the husband of Reza.  Randy is currently working on an oil tanker and is expected to be back in May.

My living arrangement with Reza (and Nicole, Jen Jen and Eden) could be viewed as a little strange.  She is a married woman whose husband is away and I am a single man.

Before I got here, CERV (the Philippines based group who organizes the volunteers) talked with all parties concerned about me staying here.  Reza, Randy and Randy's parents all gave their permission.  The situation is made even better with Eden living here as well.

I liked it that I met Randy's parents and they saw that I am a pretty clean-cut guy who does not drink or smoke.  And at the end of the day, all parties involved are adults.  I know I would never do anything that would make Reza, Randy or Randy's parents uncomfortable.
